In the spirit of continued hope for World Peace,
we have named this litterThe Nobel Peace Litter
January 29, 2002, 8pm: Labor begins; pacing, whining, panting & nesting
9pm: Water breaks
11:35pm: The first puppy appears at the birth canal
11:38pm: Our first boy is born. He joins us wriggling, at a full 1 pound, and demanding to eat! We’ve named him KOF I, for his namesake Kofi Aannan, the United Nations Secretary General, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001, for his work with the United Nations toward a better organized and more peaceful world.
12:05am: Our first girl joins us. Also vigorous, weighing 1 pound, and ready for the world! We’ve named her JODY, in honor of Jody Williams who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 for her work with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, toward the banning and clearing of anti-personnel mines.
12:23am: JOSEPH joins his siblings. Also weighing 1 pound, and healthy and vibrant, Joseph is named for Joseph Rotblat, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995 for his work with the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs in their efforts to diminish the part played by nuclear arms in international politics and in the longer run to eliminate such arms.
12:42am: Another of many girls joins the group. Another big, robust girl, RIO weighs in at 1 pound. Rio is named for Rigoberta Menchu Tum, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 in honor of her work for ethno-cultural reconciliation based on respect for the rights of indigenous peoples.
1:29am: Petite, but undaunted, AUNG SAN, joins us at 12 ounces of pure delight! Aung San is named for Aung San Suu Kyi, a Bermese activist awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 in honor of her non-violent work for human rights in working for independence in Myanmar.
1:38am: A bit larger than her sister, and with the same spunk for life, ALVA joins us at 14 ounces. Alva is named in honor of Alva Myrdal who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Alfonso Garcia Robles in 1982, in honor of their work with the United Nations on disarmament.
1:58am: TERESA joins us, full of life, at 12.5 ounces. Teresa is named for Mother Teresa who was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her work in bringing help to suffering humanity and her respect for individual human dignity.
2:48am: Weighing in at 12 ounces, and full of vim and vigor, we are blessed to be joined by EMILY. Emily is named for Emily Greene Balch, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946 in honor of her pacifism and work for peace through a variety of organizations.
3:40am: The last of our boys, THOMAS joins us at 1 pound, and ready to take on the world. Thomas is named for Thomas Woodrow Wilson who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919, for his work toward the founding of the Societe des Nations (League of Nations).
4:27am: And last, but certainly far from least, SOPHIE joins us at 14 ounces of zest for life! Sophie is named for the Baroness Bertha Sophie Felicita Von Suttner, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905 for her peace making efforts both as the Honorary President of the Permanent International Peace Bureau and through her writing. She is the author of Die Waffen Nieder (Lay Down Your Arms).
It is our hope that these golden kids will help to bring peace and love into their new families and their new world as they venture forward in the days and years to come.
