Canine Diet, Veterinary Care and Vaccinations are three very controversial subjects in today's world of pets.  On one end of the spectrum are Naturalists and on the other end are Traditionalists, with every kind of combination in between! 

Now, what seems odd to me is that the term 'traditional' usually means "out of the past, from tradition, etc.", yet the Traditionalists with regard to Canine Diet and Veterinary Care are those Allopathic Veterinarians and Pet Supply Manufacturers who are recommending a course of care for our pets that is just 50 to 100 years old.  On the other hand, the Naturalists, who are following a course of care based in what has worked (beautifully!) for hundreds of thousands of years, are considered by most to be doing something totally new and radical!  Hmmm... it seems a bit backwards to me.

In any case, here at Golden Acres we follow a Natural Care Theory for ourselves and our pets.  All of our dogs and cats eat a natural raw diet consisting of raw meats and bones, raw vegetables, raw seeds and nuts, ripe raw fruits, and healthy supplements.  In addition, we choose to use titer testing in place of automatic annual vaccinations, we steer clear of chemical pesticides (Frontline, Revolution, etc.!) and chemical 'preventatives' (click here for the Natural Insect Repellent recipe and the Natural Ear Wash that we use), and we use fresh natural spring water or distilled water instead of tap water. 

Why??  Because it makes so much sense and it keeps us and our animal friends healthy!  Dogs and cats were 'designed' to eat raw foods - it's what their bodies do best!  Raw foods are easy to digest, filled with raw vitamins and minerals (that are destroyed by cooking), filled with natural enzymes (also destroyed by cooking), and are rich in essential fatty acids (yep, these too are destroyed by cooking)!  Pet foods are just the opposite of all this goodness - all of the good nutrition in the edible ingredients has been destroyed by cooking!  (I won't even go into the lists of non-edible things included in the ingredients of commercial dog foods!)  By eating a healthy diet, dogs are able to build strong immune systems that allow them to avoid illness, disease, and parasite infections - naturally!  It's just that simple.

The results??  Our dogs are pillars of health!  No allergies, ear infections, intestinal parasites, bad breath or foul waste.  Great coats, sparkling teeth, bright eyes, ideal energy, longevity, and no vet bills!  Our dogs are exposed to viruses and parasites quite regularly, as we participate in dog shows and are involved in fostering rescue dogs (who often come from parvo and kennel cough infested shelters or puppy mills!!).  Our dogs have NEVER contracted an illness from this exposure!!  Because we vaccinate heavily??  NO!!!  Our dogs don't get sick because they have strong immune systems brought about by good nutrition and natural (vs. toxic chemical) care!  Yep, it's just that simple.
